A little more trivia today—There are a lot of migratory birds here. One of the prettier ones is a golden yellow and black bird that is an Oriole. There are also the red headed woodpeckers, lots of Humming Birds, and, of course, all of the ocean birds.
I have mentioned before that it seems like there are a lot of dogs here. The other day while we were in town a dog started barking at us. We finally figured out that he was on the roof—that was his area and he didn’t wander. I am not sure what kind he was but he sure was cute.
There are still many buildings here that have thatched roofs. We have learned that there are only five days—the two days before and the three days after a full moon—that you can harvest the palm thatch. You can then weave it into a very waterproof and sturdy roof.
Today I went fishing like the locals do. I bought a fishing line, a rather large sinker, and a large hook. This equipment cost me $3 Belize. I also got some shrimp for bait. The shrimp cost me $4 Belize. I went to the end of our dock and threw the line out into the water. Every time I threw it out I either caught a fish or the fish took my bait. Finally I hooked into a large fish that broke my line. I ended up with eleven fish they call Jacks. That’s going to be our supper.
I felt pretty proud catching these fish on my first try. Of course the locals start at a very early age and are experts while still young.
More trivia later.
