New Experiences--Sunday

I am sure that by the time our six months here in Belize is up, I will run out of things to post on this Blog.  However, right now I am having trouble keeping up with all of the new, exciting, and wonderful experiences we are having every day.
Yesterday, for example, we were walking on the beach when this woman, with her little girl in tow, approached us.  She was selling beautiful hand woven table runners, place mats, napkins, etc.  She had some draped over her arms and the rest were in a bundle on her head…it had to weigh at least 30-40 pounds.   When we acted interested in what she had, she dropped the bundle onto the beach and began to unfold each one to show us her family’s hand-made wares.

Today we went to The Living Word church for Sunday services.  It was a unique and wonderful experience.  I have never heard a preacher who was as enthusiastic as this man was about what he was saying.  After the service they had a bake sale to help sponsor a young man going on a mission trip.  We bought some wonderful “chicken puffs”.
Today’s service was apparently different from the normal in that there were several groups of young people who gave personal testimonies and performed several skits.  We will definitely have to go back again.

I took these pictures after most people had left so as not to invade their sanctuary.   One really good thing about this church is that it is air conditioned.  That helped a lot since it was a pretty long bicycle ride to get there.
After church we rode our bicycles home, changed clothes, and rode our bicycles back down town again to “Crazy Canucks” for a Sunday afternoon social time.  There was a group playing a lot of old rock and roll and Jimmy Buffet-type songs.

We met Roger and Susan there.  They are the property managers from the condo where we were originally supposed to stay.   The more we get to know them the more we really wish we could have stayed at their property.
“Crazy Canucks” had a Horse Shoe Contest and Roger and Susan won!!!!

This is Susan--Concentrate, Breathe, Toss, Follow Through!

Coconut Leo was also there.  He climbs coconut trees barefooted and does handstands and hangs from the top of the trees.

After he came down from the coconut tree he blindfolded himself and used his machete to open a coconut.

We had a couple beers and Gail had some shrimp ceviche.  When we left, we went across the street to Pepperoni Pizza and ordered a pizza with half garlic shrimp and half Italian sausage with sweet banana peppers.

The pizza kitchen (behind Gail in the picture) is a 1960 Silver Streak Trailer that is covered on the side with bamboo and the top with thatch.  Dave, the owner, told us that it is chained to five gallon buckets of concrete buried in the sand so it will stay put in case of a hurricane.  (We met Dave at the horse shoe contest.  He used to have three pizza places in Oregon but has now downsized and moved here.   He is only open in the evenings Wednesday thru Sunday.)  The tailer looks pretty authentic and the pizza is excellent.
Then it was on the bicycles again for the 2 ½ mile ride home—in the dark!--in plenty of time to watch Amazing Race.
