The Southern End of the Island

Today we decided to explore the southern end of the island.  Fortified with several cups of coffee and a hearty breakfast of apples, bananas, sweet red grapefruit, and papaya,

(Hey, we forgot the pineapple!)
We put on our sunscreen and headed to the bicycle corral to saddle up Sadie and Sam.

Armed against the elements with only two bottles of water, SPF30 sunscreen, Deep Woods Off, Gail’s Chapstick, and a camera, off we went.
One of the first places we past was Joe’s, the local restaurant and Deli

The tractor is delivering five gallon bottles of water which they sell for $5 Belize ($2.50 US).  Today, Friday, is their $4.00 Hamburger day—they are excellent.
As we progressed down the road, we saw some really nice condos and beach houses

Some not so good

The further down the road we went the more it deteriorated.

Finally we got to a path that takes us to these Mayan ruins.  These are really not much but several universities have come down here to excavate in hopes of finding something.  So far it is just a pile of rocks but the path to get there is very unique.

We passed this Poison Tree.

They say there are always two trees next to each other—like two brothers, one good and one bad.  The second tree has the antidote for the poison in the first tree.
The ruins themselves were not nearly as exciting as the path getting there.

I can not image anyone living in the middle of this swamp without an unending supply of Deep Woods Off.  It is no wonder they did not survive.
This was a long ride—five miles, or more, on dirt roads where the dirt is lose making it very hard pedaling.  We took a break on the way home.

We stopped and had a Belikin Beer and hamburger at Joe's and then it was off to get cleaned  up and siesta.
